Ombudsman RI Saves Citizens’ Funds From Maladministration

On Friday, 20/2/2026, the Indonesian Ombudsman reported that it successfully protected hundreds of billions of rupiah from losses caused by bureaucratic mismanagement. In 2025 alone, the amount safeguarded reached Rp 130.26 billion, according to Ombudsman RI Chairman, Mokhammad Najih.

Najih highlighted that the figures reflect the institution’s proactive role in preventing citizens from suffering financial harm caused by administrative errors, proving the importance of oversight in public services.

These efforts demonstrate how diligent monitoring can significantly reduce the economic impact of government mismanagement, ensuring citizens retain their rightful assets.

Annual Reports And Investigations

Throughout 2025, the Ombudsman received 23,596 reports, covering a variety of cases. These included 1,756 rapid response actions, 148 self-initiated investigations, 9,365 regular complaints, 9,607 consultations, and 2,720 forwarded reports.

Of these, 8,970 reports were successfully resolved, underscoring the agency’s effectiveness in handling high volumes of citizen grievances. Najih emphasized that such a structured approach enables the Ombudsman to respond efficiently to cases that could otherwise lead to large-scale financial losses.

This structured system ensures timely follow-ups and thorough investigation, safeguarding public trust in government services while preventing bureaucratic neglect from turning into significant losses.

When compared to the Ombudsman’s 2025 budget of Rp 215 billion, the Rp 130.26 billion saved accounts for more than 60% of the total budget. This demonstrates the remarkable efficiency of the institution in preventing financial harm to citizens.

Najih explained that these savings pertain solely to citizen losses, not the national budget, highlighting the agency’s crucial role in protecting public interests rather than government finances.

The ability to convert budget allocation into tangible citizen protection reflects the Ombudsman’s accountability and effective use of public resources.

Cumulative Impact 2021–2025

Looking at the period between 2021 and 2025, the total potential losses prevented in economic and banking sectors reached Rp 1.603 trillion. Najih noted that this calculation only includes areas where valuation methods are available and reliable.

Certain public service sectors, such as police services, remain difficult to quantify due to the absence of standardized calculation methods. This means some citizen losses may not yet be reflected in the official statistics.

Nevertheless, the cumulative data demonstrates the significant financial impact the Ombudsman has had, safeguarding citizens. From repeated instances of mismanagement and establishing a pattern of accountability.

Examples Of Valuation Cases

Najih provided examples to illustrate how valuations are calculated. For instance, citizens unable to claim house certificates after fully paying their mortgages represent a measurable financial loss. Hundreds of such cases were successfully resolved with the Ombudsman’s intervention.

In these scenarios, each individual case contributes to a cumulative amount that can be quantified and prevented from causing further financial harm. The intervention ensures citizens regain access to their rightful property or compensation.

He also clarified that these figures represent actual losses suffered by citizens, not the state budget, reinforcing that the Ombudsman’s role is centered on protecting individual rights rather than government funds.
